‘Identity’ by Ahmed Aw Geedi ‘Amin’

The she-camel
Whose term of gestation
Lasts for 390 days
That is our asset
That is our identity
That is our heritage

A dark stud he-camel
With urine splashed
From his back
To his legs
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

The horse shawl
decorated with a beautiful sitaac,
the dangling Laji
shaking the silver jewelry metal
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

A young lady
Unspoiled
Like a first born boy
Fed with purified ghee
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

A lactating caw
A calf yet to learn how to walk
Providing fresh milk
Providing yogurt & ghee
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

A bull with sharp horns
With a strong body
That grazes in the rangelands
That has strong horns
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

A violent he-goat
which looks like a wild animal
It set a trap for
Seenyo Duh, the she-goat
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

A fat sheep
That keeps the company
Of a stock of young female sheep
that is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

A beautiful lady
Wearing the traditional gear
Made from white cotton
The multi coloured silk shawl
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

Young men carrying a dagger
Well designed weapons
And three horns
Dressed in cloths made from leather
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

Pious community leaders fasting 100 days
Engaged committee of elders
That provides counsel for the good of the people
For whom people wait for under the tree
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

When people are not suffering from shortages
When there is plenty
A well behaved youth
Who clap their hands and dance
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

A lady that is weaving
Household rugs and utensils
That is prepared for a maiden
Gifts handed to the girl when she is married
That is our asset
That is our identity
That is our heritage

When guests are on the move
In order to treat them well
And honour them
A fat sheep is slaughtered
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

To treat the in-laws well
To prepare a container filled with preserved food
To give them fresh milk
That keeps them going for a night
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

Identity
Proven traditions
Dating back to ancient times
That is still practiced
That is our asset
That is our uniqueness
That is our heritage

O’ Allah protect us from
Strive
the harm of illnesses
Ongoing calamity
And catastrophe,

O’ Allah save us from
The threat of danger
The harm of adversaries
A widespread attack
the violence of conflict

O’ Allah protect us from
Storm
A protracted draught
The mass death of livestock
the hardship of times

O’ Allah let us grow out of
Suffering
Prolonged anguish
A spreading affliction
And torment
